Did you jump out of bed this morning? Because I didn’t. Today for me didn’t kick off with a thirty minute meditation session even though I’d love to tell you it did. But, does that mean I didn’t have a good morning? Not at all. I usually leave the house around 6.40am and didn’t wake up until ten past six, I then fell out of the shower (it was hair wash day so I didn’t have a choice or I would have traded it for just five more minutes) and I left the house with no eyebrows. I still made it though all be it slightly disoriented and out of breath.
With so much light on morning routines throughout social media and claims they are the secret to success it’s no wonder a lot of us feel like we’ve fallen at the first hurdle. Unless I got up VERY VERY early I would never have time to do an hour of yoga, write down all I’m grateful for, make a smoothie bowl and put on a full face of make up. Getting up at 4am isn’t on my todo list and neither is feeling guilty for not doing any of the above. I also prefer eggs in the morning incase any of you wanted to know or deliver me breakfast.
As creatures of habit, we all love a routine and can feel completely out of whack when life gets in the way. To make it easier on ourselves let’s change the morning routine into a nice simple ‘happy morning’. I know I will not always get up when my alarm goes off at 5.30am every day. If I do great I’ll enjoy the extra quiet morning time, if I don’t great, thirty minutes more sleep.
Here are a few of my favourite tips for having a happy morning and remember, your plans won’t always go the way you want. Mornings are sent to try us (especially when you add little ones into the mix) so don’t give yourself a hard time if things don’t quite go your way, tell yourself how nice you are instead.
Find the time of day when you feel most productive
For you it might be after lunch where as in the afternoon I turn into a genuine jacket potato. I don’t try to fit lots in before work because I know if it’s super early I struggle. 10am and 7pm are the times I’ve got the most umph so writing/photography usually takes place then. You can still have your shit together even when you start work at ten so don’t worry, it doesn’t make you any less of a success.
A ritual doesn’t have to be ten steps long to be effective
If you are wanting your morning to feel a bit calmer having a plan may be beneficial and you know me, I love a plan. Saying that though, you wouldn’t go and run a marathon before you’d managed to last five minutes so don’t give yourself a gazillion things to do before 7am. Just one thing you do each morning that takes priority is a good place to start and practice that until it feels like it’s part of you.
Make sure it’s for you
Your mornings are as unique as you are so only fill your time with things you love. I try my best to do 20 minutes of yoga in the morning however, if I don’t get it done I’ll do some deep breathing on my commute (sorry to whoever sits next to me I’m not weird I promise). If you don’t like yoga but love HIIT do that instead. If you’d rather sit in the garden and have a tea or cuddle with your dog on the sofa then that sounds like a morning well spent to me.
